Types of Braces

If you long for a straighter smile, orthodontic treatment can turn your hopes into a reality. In the past, options for treatment were limited and incompatible for certain patients’ lifestyles and needs. Today, there are multiple types of specialized braces designed to treat mild to severe cases in both children and adults. Whether you have a child with tooth-crowding or think a straighter smile could give you more confidence in your career, chances are we have an orthodontic solution just right for you.

Aligners

In recent years, aligners have garnered attention for their discreet appearance and practical application. Unlike traditional braces, which are affixed to the teeth, aligners are completely removable. Treatment consists of several clear plastic trays that have been custom fabricated for each patient. Trays are exchanged in a series, which gradually moves the teeth into their ideal position.

Aligners are nearly invisible and may be removed while eating. This makes them the more flexible option for patients who do not wish to be limited by dietary restrictions. Their understated appearance makes them nearly unnoticeable to co-workers, friends, and clients. It is important to note that aligners must be worn at all times except when eating or brushing your teeth.

Traditional braces

Traditional braces are the metal bracket and wire system used by millions of people around the world. Though their basic framework has remained the same for many years, advancements in modern dentistry have made them function with greater efficiency. Today’s brackets are smaller than those used in the past, and newly developed heat-activated wires utilize a patient’s natural body heat to expedite the treatment process with less pain than was experienced in the past.

Traditional braces are the standard orthodontic treatment for children, as they are both affordable and durable. Although they tend to be the most noticeable of all braces, many young patients enjoy using colorful bands to change the appearance of their braces at each orthodontic visit.

Ceramic

Ceramic braces are the closest cousin of traditional braces in that they function in exactly the same way. The difference is found in the brackets, which are not metal, but rather ceramic which blends in with the surrounding teeth. We recommend ceramic braces for people who prefer fast and effective treatment that is also subtle and discreet.

Self-Ligating

Self-ligating braces are a unique type of orthodontic treatment that looks similar to traditional braces but function in a different way. With self-ligating braces, the brackets contain moving parts that release or entrap the archwire and hold it in a fixed position. This eliminates the need for rubber or metal ligature bands. Without these bands, the braces tend to trap less food and there is also a reduction in the frictional resistance experienced with traditional braces. With less friction, the teeth may move into place with less force, making orthodontic movement more efficient.
