Types of Bites and How Our Stone Oak Orthodontics Team Treats Them

Your bite refers to the way your upper and lower teeth come together. A misaligned bite can cause a range of problems, from difficulty chewing to affecting your appearance. At Schatz Orthodontics in Stone Oak, we can treat each type of bite thanks to the variety of orthodontic services available for all ages. Just tell us where your bite isn’t fitting together, and we’ll determine how to fix it.

Which Describes Your Bite?

Dr. Eric Schatz can use his knowledge and experience to get to the source of your problem, but if one of the following rings a bell, that gives us a place to start.

Overbite

Also known as a deep bite, this occurs when the upper front teeth overlap significantly with the lower front teeth. The lower teeth can bite into the roof of your mouth, which is not only uncomfortable but also risks damaging your gums and palate. An overbite can also make the lower jaw and chin appear smaller.

Underbite

The opposite of an overbite, underbites occur when the lower front teeth protrude in front of the upper front teeth. This can cause jaw pain as well as difficulty chewing and speaking. Whereas an overbite causes the chin to recede, an underbite can make the chin appear more prominent.

Crossbite

This is when only some of your upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth when biting. This can cause the teeth to wear down unevenly. In severe cases, a crossbite can cause the jaw to shift to one side, affecting facial symmetry.

Open Bite

If your upper and lower teeth do not touch when biting, you have an open bite. In addition to making chewing difficult, open bites can contribute to speech impediments. Having your back teeth touch excessively can also wear them down.

Overjet

Also called a protrusion, this is when the upper front teeth stick out in front of the lower front teeth. Overjets can cause the lips to protrude and even increase your risk of injury to the front teeth.

What Orthodontic Treatment Works for You?

Orthodontic care at our Stone Oak office involves using various techniques and appliances to correct the alignment of your teeth and jaws. The type of treatment you need will depend on the severity of your bite issue and your specific needs and wants.

Braces

Metal or ceramic brackets are attached to your teeth and connected by wires. The wires are then adjusted every few weeks to gradually shift your teeth into the desired position. We offer several types of braces that can be used to correct all types of bites for children and adults.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners like Invisalign are a popular and more discreet alternative to braces. Instead of brackets and wires, a series of clear, removable aligners gradually shift your teeth. However, clear aligners may not be suitable for more severe bite issues.

Bite Adjustment

This procedure reshapes your teeth to improve the way they come together. We can remove small amounts of enamel or use dental crowns or veneers to alter your tooth shape. We often combine this with other orthodontic treatments.
