Invisalign FAQs

What is Invisalign® Treatment?

Invisalign® is a system of straightening teeth that uses a series of clear plastic aligners to gently move teeth into the desired straightened position. The aligners are made from SmartTrack®, which is a patented thermoplastic material.

Is Invisalign treatment right for me?

Each patient is unique, and Invisalign can generally be used with most individuals, whether teens or adults. In some instances of severe malocclusion, Invisalign may not be the best option for achieving the desired results. Dr. Schatz will do a thorough examination and evaluation of your dentition and make a recommendation based on his findings.

What is the process for getting my teeth straightened with Invisalign?

As with all orthodontic treatment modalities, Dr. Schatz will examine your teeth and bite to determine how to map out your treatment. A precise digital treatment plan will be created. Invisalign provides a computer-generated image of the final results of your treatment so you can see the projected results from the beginning.

After you discuss the treatment plan with Dr. Schatz, customized aligners will be created. These are to be worn every day for 20 to 22 hours. You will get a new set of aligners every two weeks or so as recommended by Dr. Schatz. The aligners will gently move your teeth into the predetermined position over time. You can expect treatment to last from 9 to 15 months.

Is Invisalign treatment more expensive than traditional braces?

Most patients find that the cost of Invisalign is similar to that of braces. Cost is generally determined on the complexity of the case. Talk to Dr. Schatz about available payment options.

Will my dental insurance cover the cost of Invisalign treatment?

In most cases, Invisalign is covered in the same way traditional braces are covered. Depending on the type of coverage you have, your insurance may pay for part of the treatment, or it may pay a certain dollar amount toward treatment.

I have braces now, but can I switch to Invisalign?

There is a possibility that you may be able to change from your current traditional braces to Invisalign. Schedule a consultation appointment with Dr. Schatz for more information and an evaluation.

I used to wear braces and now my teeth have shifted. Can Invisalign straighten my teeth again?

Invisalign is used to correct a variety of misalignment problems from simple to complex. If your teeth have shifted out of alignment, talk with Dr. Schatz about Invisalign to move them back in place.

Do my aligners need special care?

You can use the Invisalign cleaning system to clean your aligners or you can clean them with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Use cool or tepid water to rinse your aligners. Hot water may permanently warp the plastic, so avoid using it.

If you eat food that stains your teeth, like blueberries or red sauce, be sure to brush your teeth before putting your aligners in. The dye from certain foods can stain your aligners.

What happens if I lose or break an aligner?

Give us a call, and let us know. It is important to maintain your treatment plan, and Dr. Schatz will determine the best way to move forward. You may need to wear a previous set of aligners, the next set or have a replacement made. Aligners are considered prescription items, so replacements will need to be ordered through Dr. Schatz.

Will I need to wear a retainer after treatment?

Most patients who undergo orthodontic treatment will need to wear a retainer to prevent the teeth from shifting out of their new position. Dr. Schatz will talk with you about post treatment procedures for your specific case.
